Born in Hungary in 1860 Herzl as a newspaper correspondent attended the trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in 1894 and shocked by the injustice and general persecution of Jews in Europe was moved to write a book urging the formation of a Jewish State. He organised the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and although he died in 1904 is generally credited with the subsequent movement for the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
