Undated circa late 1970's An interesting booklet on the humble clay tobacco pipe and its manufacturing history in Sussex. A subject of interest in itself it also establishes the importance of the use of the discovery of fragments of such items as a tool in dating archaeological finds in undisturbed levels in digs because armed with knowledge of types and manufacturers such artifacts can be dated to within 20 years back to c.1590. The work is largely a pulling together of a number of papers and articles written by the author over the period 1958- 1970 together with a list of Sussex Pipe Makers published by him in Sussex Archaeological Collections in 1972 + updates to the date of publication.
